  • Our Spring Products are Back!

Spring is my favorite time of year. The air is full of energy and the farm is full of new life with baby goats and the garden sprouting. I prefer to be outside, and after months of being huddled up in the house or (being my stubborn self) trying to get things done outside in spite of the cold, I am thrilled to shake my cabin fever and spend some time in the sun.

About halfway through winter I start to feel restless and it can feel like spring will never arrive. Why is it that winter feels so incredibly long, but all the other seasons go by in a flash? My one saving grace is that our soaps have to cure for at least six weeks, so come the end of January it’s time to begin making our Spring and Secret Spring Goat Milk Soaps. This will allow for cure date before the season change. On the winter days when we make these two seasonal soaps the fresh floral scents fill the soap facility and reassure me that warmer weather is on the horizon… just a curing session away. It’s a pick me up that (usually) pushes me through the rest of the cold, dark season that is winter.

  • What’s in our Soap Dish – April

Spring has sprung! What’s in our soap dish for Spring?

    Spring Goat Milk Soap

On the first day of spring we brought back our Spring Goat Milk Soap and during April it really gets some use around here. As we slowly ease into spring this soap boosts our spirits and helps us shake off the winter slump. It has the earthy scent of lemongrass and the light floral scent of rose and lavender that make us dream of the flowers that will soon be blooming all over the farm.

    Rosewood Salt Goat Milk Soap

Our Rosewood Salt Soap is a regular in this house, but it really gets used this time of year. It won’t be long before bare feet and flip-flops come out, so it time to get my feet back into shape after being in boots the last few months. Rosewood Salt makes a great foot bar! It exfoliates and softens.

  • Budding Spring

I decided this year that I wanted to document the first day of spring on the farm. While there isn’t a lot of “spring like” things happening yet, there are little hints that spring is on it’s way. There is new life on the farm with the baby goats, the trees are starting to bud, and the daffodils, the first flower to pop up each year, are poking through the ground throughout the farm. The start of spring brings so much excitement! I can’t wait to see what this spring has in store for the farm and gardens!

  • 2015 Spring Goat Milk Soap

It’s SPRING!! Oh my goodness I am not sure I have ever been so happy for winter to end. Yesterday was the first day of Spring, which means it is time for our Spring Goat Milk Soap to come out!

Spring Goat Milk Soap from The Freckled Farm Soap Company

The plan was to have a set scent to represent each season that would return each year. This worked out for all of our seasonal soaps, except for Spring… which we learned soon after making the first batch that Kevin and I were allergic to the main essential oil used. It was awful! Every time we had to work with it we would both get terrible sinus headaches. So, while it was a pretty bar of soap, that many people enjoyed, we had to change it up this year. The other seasonal varieties were wildly popular (especially Winter which sold out in just two weeks!) and will remain the same. So what did we pick for this year’s spring soap?!…. A wonderful floral blend!

For the 2015 Spring Goat Milk Soap we used the essential oils of Jasmine (one of my favorite scents), Rose, and Lavender. This bright, cheery soap has a light floral scent. It’s a beautiful blend and I am extremely happy with it! This will be a returning soap for sure!

Our Spring Goat Milk Soap will be available on our website and at our farmers market and craft show booths through the Spring!

  • Gardening: Stage 1 – Planning

Our garden is going to be quite an undertaking this year. In the past we have filled 12 raised beds with plants, but it has never been enough to last us much past fall. We would have things like green beans that we could get a year supply of, but when it came to everything else we would burn through it quite quickly. Few things made it to the freezer like planned. I would get enough tomatoes for all of my tomato sandwiches and salads throughout the summer and sauces for spaghetti and pizza for about two months. Everything else pretty much feeds us through spring and summer. That isn’t enough for me! I want to have enough canned and frozen to get us through the year. The biggest change this year, that will hopefully make this goal a reality, is the fact that we have a new quarter of an acre that will be additional garden space. Last year we added three acres of land to our farm from the property next to us. Most of that currently is or will be in the future, used for the goats, but I left a quarter acre opened for our new garden.

Taking on a new garden of this size requires a lot of planning. The ground is hard red clay that is very common to this area of Goochland. I have been worried about growing anything in it. For the last six months or more I have been dumping the soiled straw and llama manure from the daily muckings, covering the entire quarter of an acre. We plan to plow (just this once) because the ground is so not at all workable.

This is the time of year for garden planning. Ordering seeds, deciding on the number of plants that will be planted, mapping out where they will go, and figuring out planting times. I spent time with my lovely friend Toni from Bella Grove Farms in Goochland VA back in early February. She spent the better part of the day giving me advice and packing me up seeds that she had saved from previous years. Between those seeds, seeds I had leftover from the last two years, and the ones I purchased from Johnny’s Selected Seeds I’m ready! In the coming weeks things should start to come together. Now I am working on actually mapping out the garden space and planning of number of plants. I am beyond ready for Spring! It’s almost here!

Our Spring soap is scented with the essential oil of calendula, also know as Pot Marigold. It has a deep floral scent and because of the essential oil is naturally yellow. It is topped with the wispy yellow petals of the calendula flower. This beautiful bar just screams SPRING!

  • What’s up Wednesday – 3/19

The post is coming a little late today. We had a crazy day to top off a very eventful week. Tina kidded early this morning. One kid was born before we got outside to her at 5am and the other came shortly after. The second kid came out in a bad position, making it a very complicated birth. I am extremely grateful that we got to her in time for that one. I will write a separate post where I go into more detail about her labor later. Tina was the last goat to kid. Hillary kidded Sunday, so all of our 2014 kids are here!

While you wait for the post about Hillary and Tina’s kidding I thought I would go ahead and share a little sneak peek picture of all of the cuteness to come… This is Chelsea
