Benefits of Turmeric for Your Skin

Turmeric has really become a popular skin care ingredient over the last few years. Like with the activated charcoal several years ago, people have had their eyes opened to the benefits of turmeric for your skin. In this post we outline why our Turmeric Goat Milk Soap should be added to your skin care routine.

Benefits of Turmeric for Your Skin

    1. It can Aid in the Healing of Acne: Turmeric is believed to have antibacterial and antiseptic properties, because of this it is said that it might help fight acne-causing bacteria. This magic ingredient is also said to be anti-inflammatory. This could help accelerate the healing of skin that is already irritated.
    2. Gives your Skin a Natural Glow: Turmeric’s anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiseptic properties come together to leave your skin healthy and clean. Your skin is left looking bright and even.
    3. Lightens Dark Spots (Hyper-Pigmentation): Age and sun can bring about dark spots on our skin. When used regularly it is believed that turmeric can lighten these spots and give your skin a more even appearance.
    4. Manages Oily Skin: Sebum is an oily substance produced by the sebaceous glands. Turmeric is said to help regulate its production, making your skin less oily.
    5. Could Help Psoriasis and Eczema: Let me start by saying if you are fighting one of these awful skin conditions you should first seek help from your doctor. If you are looking for a natural way to help combat them try adding a turmeric soap to your regiment. PhK is a protein associated with psoriasis. It is said that turmeric helps inhibit the activity of this protein. Turmeric’s antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties may help with eczema.
    6. Fights Premature Aging: Who wouldn’t want that?! It is believed that turmeric may boost collagen growth and accelerate the growth of new healthy tissue. This could help in the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles.

If you are using straight turmeric on your skin it can cause your skin to develop a yellow hue. This is only temporary, but can be avoided by using our Turmeric Goat Milk Soap. We have formulated the soap so that you have the right concentration of turmeric to get this benefits without dying your skin.

If all of these benefits aren’t enough to convince you to try our Turmeric Goat Milk Soap then the deep, spicy scent (turmeric powder and turmeric, frankincense, and grapefruit essential oils) and wonderful rich lather feel will! Head over to our website to pick up a few bars yourself!

The information in this post is not meant as medical advice. Please consult your doctor if you are having issues with your skin. Always test new products on a small area of skin before regular use.

  • Our Spring Products are Back!

Spring is my favorite time of year. The air is full of energy and the farm is full of new life with baby goats and the garden sprouting. I prefer to be outside, and after months of being huddled up in the house or (being my stubborn self) trying to get things done outside in spite of the cold, I am thrilled to shake my cabin fever and spend some time in the sun.

About halfway through winter I start to feel restless and it can feel like spring will never arrive. Why is it that winter feels so incredibly long, but all the other seasons go by in a flash? My one saving grace is that our soaps have to cure for at least six weeks, so come the end of January it’s time to begin making our Spring and Secret Spring Goat Milk Soaps. This will allow for cure date before the season change. On the winter days when we make these two seasonal soaps the fresh floral scents fill the soap facility and reassure me that warmer weather is on the horizon… just a curing session away. It’s a pick me up that (usually) pushes me through the rest of the cold, dark season that is winter.

Spring Products from The Freckled Farm Soap Company

    Spring Products

Our Spring products all come in the robust floral scent of lavender and geranium. It’s a lovely, bright scent that is sure to lift your spirits. It is only around while supplies last, so don’t wait to pick some up for yourself. You can find this amazing scent in a Goat Milk Soap, Goat Milk Lotion, Beeswax Candle, Gift Set, and …

    New This Year

We added a brand new product to our Spring line this year, our Spring Essential Oil Roller. Last year we added a few seasonal rollers to our line but it was after spring had come and gone. We finally have the opportunity now to add this uplifting scented roller to our line. Roll this bright floral scent on your skin and smell like spring all day long!

    Secret Spring

Each season we make a special batch of soap that is just for our subscription customers. They are not available on the website or in stores. We don’t even promote the scent publicly. All I can say is that it features one of my absolute favorite scents. It is bright and fresh… and my personal favorite among the Secret Scents.

If you want access to this awesome bar of soap purchase the “Surprise Me”, “Surprise Them”, Seasonal, or Everything You Need Subscription.

Like with all of our seasonal products, quantities are limited. Once they sell out they are gone until next year, so head to our shop now!

  • Discontinuing Our Topped Goat Milk Soaps

We will be discontinuing our topped Goat Milk Soaps.

This time of year we always sit down and take stock on the year ahead. We figure out our production schedule, what products we want to work on developing, and what products we want to discontinue. It’s always hard to make the decision to stop making a product, but sometimes it just has to be done. This year we decided that it was time to stop making our Lavender Goat Milk Soap topped with lavender buds and our Oatmeal Honey Goat Milk Soap that is adorned with oats. Don’t worry! We are not getting rid of these bars entirely. We will maintain the plain (untopped) Lavender Goat Milk Soap and the plain (untopped) Oatmeal Honey Goat Milk Soap.

In our farmers market days the topped soaps were incredibly popular and when they were just being added to a shopping bag it was easy enough to keep everything neat. Now that our business has shifted to online sales these soaps have become a mess! A few days in the mail the buds and oats are everywhere in the box. They also created a mess everywhere else… including the workspace and cure room. And to be perfectly honest, without them sitting in front of customers, standing out with their beautiful adornments, they haven’t been selling as fast. At the same time their untopped counterparts have greatly increased in sales. We have to work hard to keep both of these varieties in stock. So, while they are pretty and make a lovely decoration next to your sink we decided it was best to discontinue making them.

We have a pretty good supply left and they will be around until they sell out. If these are some of your favorite soaps make sure you click over to the soap product page and stock up.

  • Returning to South of the James

***UPDATE: We are NOT doing any in person markets or craft shows until Covid-19 has passed. We are maintaining the free shipping on orders $30+ for the foreseeable future.***

We had a bit of a false start earlier this month. We had decided to return to the drive-through/preorder portion of the South of the James Farmers Market the first weekend of June. After a week of constant promotion we hadn’t made enough sales to cover the cost of the market and made the decision to mail out the orders that we had received rather than attending the market. It seemed like this was the case across the board and SOJ recently made the decision to shorten the length of the drive-through at the request of vendors. At the time we were not yet ready to return to the walk-through portion so we decided to step back until we were ready to return to the market as a whole. We spent the last few weeks watching the numbers trend down in Virginia and thought it might be a good time to return before we potentially saw another spike, so we made the decision to return to the full market next weekend (June 27th). If the time of Covid has taught us anything it’s that you can’t plan too far into the future, and because of this we are just taking our schedule for the market week by week. If we see the numbers spike or we feel the mask and distance rules are not taken seriously enough we will step back and reassess. We may be there a week, we may be back for good… at this point we are taking it week by week and trying to make the best decision for our family and business.

    How this will work…

South of the James at Bryan Park (note that SOJ is not currently operating at Forest Hill Park)

8am-9am – Drive through and preorder only

9:15-11:45 – Walk through and preorder if you prefer

All customers must wear masks and are not allowed within the vendors’ tents. All vendors will be wearing masks and gloves. We will not be giving change. Credit cards are preferred.

You can place your preorder for both portions of the market in two ways:

    • Our website. Use the shipping options “SOJ Pick Up” at check out. Orders must be placed by Midnight on Thursday.
    • SOJ’s Pre-order system (order from many of your favorite vendors all in one place) through Lulus. Orders must be placed by Noon on Thursday – https://growrva.luluslocalfood.com/

Since customers are not allowed within the tents we are having to reconfigure our set up and will have to bring less product than normal. If you are looking for specific products we strongly suggest you preorder to make sure you get exactly what you want.

As for the lowered threshold for free shipping, we are still not able to vend at the Charlottesville City Market so it will remain in place. There has actually been discussion about keeping it indefinitely because our customers have been so appreciative. We are mailing out orders placed by 5pm (EST) the next business day, so if you are uncomfortable coming out to the market you can still place your order online and receive your soap quickly.

Thank you again for all of your support during this difficult time.

  • Soap Making in Photos

We wanted to give customers a little sneak peek into our soap making process though photos. I hope you enjoy.

Making Soap with The Freckled Farm Soap Company

First we measure out all of the solid oils. These oils need to be melted, so they are added to a container that is wrapped in a warming device. The warmer melts the solid oils over several hours. We normally measure out the solid oils the night before and turn on the warmers at 5am when we are beginning farm chores, that way the oils are melted when we come out to make soap after farm chores are done and we have eaten breakfast. Once the oils are melted we move them into the large stock pot that the soap is made in. We run the oils through a filter to catch anything that might fall into the soap.

    Filtering oils for soap making

We freeze our milk in a solid block. It takes less time to set up and takes up less space in the freezer. Once frozen we use an icepick to break up the milk into smaller chunks that are easier to measure and to mix the lye into. We return the measured milk to the freezer until we are ready for it later in the process.

Next, the oils in liquid form are measured out:

They too are run through the filter as they are added to the other melted oils:

Once all the oils are measured and added to the stock pot we start preparing the milk/lye mixture. Because the milk is frozen when the lye is added the temperature never rises above 76-80 degrees and the milk maintains it’s light color. If lye is added to room temperature milk the milk will turn brown and potentially take on a burnt scent. When the milk and lye are well mixed they are added to the oil. It too is run through the filter (a larger one) but this time it is to break up and catch any fat clumps that may have formed.

Adding Milk to Goat Milk Soap

We push the remaining milk through the strainer to break up the fat clumps.

We then mix everything together with an industrial sized stick blender.

Once the oils reach the light trace stage the essential oils are added

The mixture is then poured into the molds.

We then scrap off the excess on top of the molds to fill the remaining molds and to smooth the top of the soap.

    Smoothing Soap

This particular batch is the topped version of our Lavender Goat Milk Soap. We add the lavender buds last.

Finally, the soap sits for at least 24 hours while it firms up. It is cut and placed on the curing racks, where it will stay for 4-6 weeks while it cures.

  • Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day from The Freckled Farm Soap Company

At The Freckled Farm Soap Company we are committed to making the most earth conscious decisions possible for our farm and business. Our oils are organic and from certified sustainable sources. The vast majority of the packaging for our products is made with recycled materials and/or is compostable. Our products are safer for the water system than their commercial counterparts. The grain for our goats is sourced from a local farm. The hay we feed them is also local and is spray free (this essentially means organic but lacks the certification). Our barn is solar powered and we hope to eventually move our entire operation to solar. These options are not the cheapest or the easiest, but taking care of the world around us and offering a product that gives our customers a more eco-friendly option is incredibly important to us. Happy Earth Day everyone!
