  • Getting to Know… Tux

Tux is the newest member of our farm family. I had been talking about wanting an inside lap cat for a while. Don’t get me wrong our other inside cat, Buckley, is a wonderful companion, but he has never been much of a lap cat (although this has change a little in his old age). A friend of ours, who works at a vet in Goochland, called us on Christmas eve saying that she found our lap cat. Animal control brought her into the vet completely out of it. The vet had fixed her up and they wanted to make sure she went to a good home. We went to visit her an hour later. She was so sweet and good with the kids that we told our friend to let animal control know that we were interested in her. She was at the vet another few days after which she went back to animal control to finish out her hold time, where they hold her for a short period to see if she is claimed. No one claimed her so we picked her up and brought her home on New Years Eve. She settled immediately and bonded strongly with the children. She is full of energy and is incredibly loving… She’s my perfect lap cat.

  • Getting to Know… Digit

Digit is our sweet barn cat. He plays a large role here on the farm. His job is to keep rodents out of the feed and hay. This not only saves us money, because we are not having to replace feed that has been spoiled, but it protects the health of the entire herd. Rodents carry parasites and diseases that can affect the other animals. I cannot express enough Digit’s importance. We got Digit for this purpose, and he does his job extremely well, but he is so much more than just a rodent hunter. Digit has somehow become the watch dog of the property. He feels that it is his job to keep dogs out of the yard. We have witnessed him attacking strange dogs on more than one occasion. He has sent quite a few of them out of the yard yelping with their tail between their legs. This little fact might make him sound like a mean cat, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Digit is an amazing companion. He loves to be held and loved on. He is incredibly sweet and is extremely loved!

  • What’s up Wednesday – 4/23

Another busy, productive week on the farm! This past weekend we finally found time to build the buck house. Bad weather and incredibly busy schedules had forced us to put off that project a lot longer than we had originally planned. It came together nicely and will make a good home for our boys. Now we just need to paint it, put up the boys’ bed, hang the hay feeder, and fence. We should be picking up our buck in the next few weeks, so hopefully it will come together before then.

We had a pretty unpleasant experience this weekend… While doing farm chores on Saturday we found a snake in the hay. At this point we don’t know if it was a baby black snake or baby copperhead. Our instincts said copperhead so we killed it and threw it far away in the woods. I would have never killed a black snake, but any copperhead needs to be eliminated! The babies are especially scary. After the fact we were looking at pictures of both baby black snakes and baby copperheads and they look quite similar. Either way a snake is a sign of mice and you do NOT want mice in your hay. So our “we think we might need to get a barn cat soon” turned to “we need to get a barn cat now!” We went to our friend Donna’s farm (Money Pitt Acres) to pick out one of the cats she was trying to rehome. We brought him home, set him up in a kennel on the porch and fed him. We were instructed to leave him in a kennel for a few days so he was able to learn that this was his new home. Unfortunately, yesterday, when Kevin was cleaning out the kennel the cat got out and ran away and we haven’t seen him since. We are all very upset about it and have tuna sitting on the porch hoping he will come back… which I sure will attract more than just our cat, but it’s worth the risk.

We are still working on the new scrubs and bath teas! We are hoping to debut them at the opening of My Manakin Market on May 3rd. We have gotten the thumbs up from our testers and now it just requires us to get labels together. We are so excited about offering these awesome new products! We are also only a week away from debuting our May goat milk soap! Check back to see what it is.

  • Geting to Know The Freckled Farm – Buckley

Want to know more about the farmers, animals, and buildings on The Freckled Farm? Every Friday I introduce you to another part of The Freckled Farm. This week you have a chance to get to know Buckley!

Buckley Cat - The Freckled FarmBuckley is the last animal to be featured in this series (at least until more animals are added to the farm), but it’s not because he holds the least importance. Buckley was the first real big decision that Kevin and I ever made together. We had been dating a little under a year when we decided to take a two week road trip to visit several family members. Our first stop was in Tampa, Florida to visit Kevin’s Aunt and Grandmother. When we got there we discovered that one of their cats had given birth a couple months before and there were all of these sweet little kittens running around. All of them were pure white with blue eyes.. all of them except for Buckley who was silver and black. He was so sweet and beautiful that there was no way we were leaving him behind. He went on the rest of the road trip with us and the rest is history. He is the most tolerant animal I have ever known. I’ve never known a cat that was so good with young children. He is an amazing cat and he is extremely loved.
