  • 2024 365 Project

What an incredible journey 2023 has been for us! We’re thrilled to share that we’ve sent nearly 25,000 bars of our Goat Milk Soap out into the world this year, alongside thousands of lotions and laundry soap bags. We sold so much soap that we are having to reconfigure our soap making process and schedule in order to meet the demand efficiently. We’re a tiny family-run business, and while our children lend a hand here and there, it’s mainly Kevin and me running every facet of the business—from crafting the soap, lotions, and laundry soaps, to packaging, shipping, managing our social media presence and returning customer’s emails and calls.

In 2020 we stopped attending farmers markets, for obvious reasons, and moved totally online. We were extremely fortunate to be able to make that move so seamlessly, but some of the parts of what has always made our company so great, like the fact that we are run by a small family, were lost in the transition. When everything is online it is hard to convey to customers how much work goes into the products they order, or for them to get a sense of the family they are supporting with their purchase. I think some of the anonymity that comes with your business being online causes some customers to treat you like you aren’t human, like trying to take advantage of a business doesn’t actually hurt anyone. I am in no way implying that this happens a lot, but it does happen, and it has happened more this year than any other year in the past. I think the way Amazon and other massive companies do business has really set many small businesses up for failure and has created unrealistic expectations. It has also made even small businesses seem faceless at times…. And I have to admit that our social media has been lacking this year. My heart has not been in it… at all. After ten and a half years in business I feel like I am in social media groundhog day, so I know that is contributing to some newer customers not seeing the family behind the business. So, in order to help show new costumers the family behind the bar of soap and to get me out of the social media rut, I am going to start a new 365 project (technically 366.. leap year!). We have done these projects in the past but they have only been farm based. In fact, we started one in 2020 that we dropped three months in, when covid started and our world was turned upside down. We needed to just focus on making things work and keep our business moving forward, rather than getting cute goat pictures.

This 365 project is going to be different though. It will be all encompassing. You will see our whole world, not just the farm. I will do my best to shake of the expectation that each picture in our feed needs to be perfect and flawless and just show you the real us. This project will span across all our social media platforms—TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and maybe even YouTube. We aim to offer diverse content that unveils who you’re supporting with each dollar spent and demonstrate the dedication and hard work that goes into every product we create. It’s about sharing our story, our trials, and triumphs—bringing you closer to the heart of our family business.

  • Ten Year Anniversary

Earlier this month we celebrated the tenth anniversary of when we started The Freckled Farm Soap Company. This time ten years ago we were in the last stages of perfecting our goat milk soap recipe after a year of tiny tweaks and starting all of the paperwork to make our business official. We had the desire to create a high quality, eco friendly, affordable product but more than anything we had the desire to work and be together as a family.

This anniversary is a huge milestone. While we hoped this is where the business would be ten years later we felt it was a long shot. We have gone through so many changes over the years and after our biggest change, during covid when we went from depending mostly on farmers markets for sales to depending on online sales, our customers adjusted and changed with us. We are forever grateful for those of you who have helped get us here.

Thank you to all of you who have held us up and helped us grow over the last decade.

  • Returning to South of the James

***UPDATE: We are NOT doing any in person markets or craft shows until Covid-19 has passed. We are maintaining the free shipping on orders $30+ for the foreseeable future.***

We had a bit of a false start earlier this month. We had decided to return to the drive-through/preorder portion of the South of the James Farmers Market the first weekend of June. After a week of constant promotion we hadn’t made enough sales to cover the cost of the market and made the decision to mail out the orders that we had received rather than attending the market. It seemed like this was the case across the board and SOJ recently made the decision to shorten the length of the drive-through at the request of vendors. At the time we were not yet ready to return to the walk-through portion so we decided to step back until we were ready to return to the market as a whole. We spent the last few weeks watching the numbers trend down in Virginia and thought it might be a good time to return before we potentially saw another spike, so we made the decision to return to the full market next weekend (June 27th). If the time of Covid has taught us anything it’s that you can’t plan too far into the future, and because of this we are just taking our schedule for the market week by week. If we see the numbers spike or we feel the mask and distance rules are not taken seriously enough we will step back and reassess. We may be there a week, we may be back for good… at this point we are taking it week by week and trying to make the best decision for our family and business.

    How this will work…

South of the James at Bryan Park (note that SOJ is not currently operating at Forest Hill Park)

8am-9am – Drive through and preorder only

9:15-11:45 – Walk through and preorder if you prefer

All customers must wear masks and are not allowed within the vendors’ tents. All vendors will be wearing masks and gloves. We will not be giving change. Credit cards are preferred.

You can place your preorder for both portions of the market in two ways:

    • Our website. Use the shipping options “SOJ Pick Up” at check out. Orders must be placed by Midnight on Thursday.
    • SOJ’s Pre-order system (order from many of your favorite vendors all in one place) through Lulus. Orders must be placed by Noon on Thursday – https://growrva.luluslocalfood.com/

Since customers are not allowed within the tents we are having to reconfigure our set up and will have to bring less product than normal. If you are looking for specific products we strongly suggest you preorder to make sure you get exactly what you want.

As for the lowered threshold for free shipping, we are still not able to vend at the Charlottesville City Market so it will remain in place. There has actually been discussion about keeping it indefinitely because our customers have been so appreciative. We are mailing out orders placed by 5pm (EST) the next business day, so if you are uncomfortable coming out to the market you can still place your order online and receive your soap quickly.

Thank you again for all of your support during this difficult time.

  • Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day from The Freckled Farm Soap Company

At The Freckled Farm Soap Company we are committed to making the most earth conscious decisions possible for our farm and business. Our oils are organic and from certified sustainable sources. The vast majority of the packaging for our products is made with recycled materials and/or is compostable. Our products are safer for the water system than their commercial counterparts. The grain for our goats is sourced from a local farm. The hay we feed them is also local and is spray free (this essentially means organic but lacks the certification). Our barn is solar powered and we hope to eventually move our entire operation to solar. These options are not the cheapest or the easiest, but taking care of the world around us and offering a product that gives our customers a more eco-friendly option is incredibly important to us. Happy Earth Day everyone!
